Joint stock company Radio SWH was founded in 1993 as the first private radio station in Latvia with its own schedule. In a manner it was a revolutionary event as it initiated great alteration in media and advertising market in Latvia, creating a new - private media sector
Already in 1994, the first expansion occurred - besides the station Radio SWH (Hot Adult Contemporary format), which aired in Latvian, two stations - Radio SWH Plus and Radio Amadeus - were founded, one respectively adapted for Russian speaking audience, second - for lovers of classical music.
When the competition grew, the radio made the next move in 1999 - after winning the tender for rights to develop the broadcasting net throughout Latvia, for regional offices - in Valmiera, Rezekne, Jekabpils and Liepaja - were opened.
In addition to the broadcasting of Radio SWH programme in common net, regional offices prepare local news and attract local advertisers.
In 2000, radio studio in Ventspils started working. The last conceptual changes were made in 2001, when instead of Radio Amadeus the new station - Radio SWH Rock - was created.
As main keys to the long-term success of Radio SWH should be mentioned the chosen "live radio" pattern and management ability to form very strong team. Our radio personalities don't need any explanations. They have proven themselves on air and in off-hours. Thanks to their professionalism radio is strongly linked to its listeners. Not to mention the phenomenon of our morning show, the link is sustained with intriguing contests and round-the-clock musical and entertaining information.
Choice of music played on all three radio stations is a subject to careful selection, and you can believe the press, if they say that Radio SWH has an influence on music industry in our country.
Significant place in Radio SWH schedule (once in a half-hour) is allocated to reflection of social and political events, with emphasis on sports, economy, transport and weather reports. Professionalism of news service has created a very high social confidence. Their motto - operative and objective information.
Vaira Vike - Freiberga, The president of Latvia, has chosen Radio SWH to share weekly her views and impressions on the events.
BRAND and SALES PROMOTION activities also contributed to the popularity of Radio SWH, creating a good recognition and alternative advertising opportunities. Radio clients and even competitors set a high value upon these projects.
Within the scope of promotion, Radio SWH has staged also several concerts of world-famous artists - such as BB King, ELO, Ace of Bace, Army of Lovers, Gipsy King, Rozallas, Haddaway, Fool’s Garden, Panjabi MC etc.
Research, made by BMF Gallup Media early in 2003, shows that Radio SWH maintains leading position among private radio stations - with 26% of total radio audience in Riga and 16% in Latvia.
Total size of advertising market in 2002 in Latvia reached 43,7 million lats. 13% or 5,68 millons were placed on radio advertising. Turnover of Radio SWH in 2002 was 1,86 millions, that is, 32,8% of radio advertising market.
While developing and broadening, Radio has added new and reorganized the existing departments. In 2003, Staff number has reached 120.
